New Bern Woman Wins $100,000 From Ticket Her Dad Gave Her

New Bern, North Carolina, woman Destiny Poppell won $100,000 from a scratch-off ticket gifted to her by her dad and plans to treat her family to dinner.

Destiny Poppell of New Bern, North Carolina, plans to take her dad and uncle out for a nice steak dinner after a scratch-off ticket they gave her turned out to be worth $100,000.

Poppell’s dad and uncle had purchased several scratch-off tickets, including a $30 $100,000 Cash Payday ticket, from Highway 33 Convenience Mart on N.C. 33 East in Edward. They took the tickets home and gave one to Poppell.

While the tickets her dad and uncle kept did not win any prizes, the ticket they gave Poppell turned out to be a $100,000 top-prize winner. The odds of winning the top prize were 1 in 76,752.

Poppell said she initially needed to check with her fiancé before believing what she was seeing.

“I had to check with my fiancé to make sure it was real, like I was reading it correctly,” she recalled.

Once she realised she had won, Poppell told her dad and uncle. She said they were understandably disappointed that their own tickets had not won, but were also excited for her.

“They said, ‘There’s no one more deserving,'” Poppell said.

Poppell plans to use part of her winnings to thank the family members who unknowingly handed her the winning ticket. She intends to take her dad and uncle out for a nice steak dinner.

She also plans to help take care of her mom and put some of the money towards law school.

After state and federal tax withholdings, Poppell received $72,018 from the $100,000 prize.

For Poppell, a ticket that began as a gift from her dad has now turned into both a significant financial win and a chance to give something back to her family.
