Atlantic Woman Wins $50,000 and Plans to Pay Off Bills and Her Car

Atlantic, Iowa, woman Kelly McDermott won $50,000 and plans to use the money to pay bills and pay off her car, bringing a sense of financial relief.

A southwest Iowa woman says winning $50,000 has given her a sense of relief, allowing her to focus on paying her bills and getting her car paid off.

Kelly McDermott of Atlantic won a top prize in the Iowa Lottery’s “Bonus Cash Doubler” scratch game. She purchased her winning ticket at Casey’s, 1408 E. Seventh St. in Atlantic, using winnings from a previous winning ticket.

After scratching the ticket at home, McDermott discovered that she had won the game’s second top prize.

She claimed the $50,000 prize Tuesday at the Iowa Lottery’s main office in Clive, where she joked about how difficult it had been to explain the significance of the win to her dog.

“I kept trying to tell the dog last night she’s going to have some pretty fancy bones, and she just didn’t understand me,” McDermott said with a laugh.

While the dog may not have understood the news, McDermott said the prize has made a significant difference for her.

“I don’t have to worry about bills anymore,” she said. “I can take care of business and do what I need to do.”

McDermott plans to use the $50,000 to pay her bills and pay off her car, giving her more financial flexibility going forward.
