Taber Man Wins $100,000 and Tells His Wife, “We Have a Problem!”

Taber, Alberta, man Vonie Prijoles discovered a $100,000 prize while checking old tickets and plans to save the money for his sons’ college education.

Vonie Prijoles of Taber, Alberta, was spending his day off catching up on a stack of lottery tickets when he discovered one was worth $100,000.

Prijoles said he was sitting in his car checking several tickets that had been sitting around for some time. He scanned them using the Lotto Spot app and was stunned by what appeared on the screen.

“I was in my car on my day off checking multiple lottery tickets that I’d had sitting around,” he explained. “I was scanning them on the Lotto Spot app, and I couldn’t believe my eyes.”

The unexpected win then presented Prijoles with another challenge: deciding how to tell his wife.

“I was wondering how to tell my wife, and I wanted to wait until she got home,” he said.

When she eventually walked through the door, Prijoles decided to have a little fun with the news.

“The first thing I said to her when she walked in the door is, ‘We have a problem!’” he recalled.

Once he revealed that the “problem” was actually a $100,000 prize, his wife was stunned.

“She was stunned,” Prijoles said.

Prijoles already has a clear plan for the money. Rather than spending it immediately, he intends to save the winnings and use them to help pay for his sons’ college education.

“I am planning to save it and pay for my sons’ college education,” he said. “It just feels surreal.”

Prijoles purchased his winning LOTTO MAX ticket from the 7-Eleven on 50 Avenue in Taber. He won the $100,000 prize in the May 5 LOTTO MAX draw by matching the numbers 5, 6, 15, 19, 32, 36 and 38.

For Prijoles, what began as a routine effort to clear out a stack of old tickets ended with an unexpected opportunity to help provide for his sons’ education.
